Appendix II.
A. List of Plates in Devonshire Illustrated.
Fisher’s views for Devonshire and Cornwall Illustrated were
all approx. 155 x 95 mm (w x h) not including title, imprint or dedication and
printed two to a page, each page measuring 230 x 290 mm.[1] The
sequence given here is not the sequence as followed in the original parts issue
and reproduced in Appendix V and is the order followed by Somers Cocks entry S. 107. Column 3 (Print) is the Somers Cocks individual plate
number.
All Fisher´s plates can be
seen on the even numbered pages starting at page 106 (not to size). A small
amount of retouching has been carried out to remove the browning of the paper
and improve contrast on some prints.
Notes: All titles and imprint, Fisher
Son & Co., London, in capitals throughout. Each “portrait” sheet (of 2 views) has imprint at bottom only, 1 cm below lower
view, and is dated (1829 to 1832) as
per Part issue. The “landscape” pages bear an imprint for each view.
Bound
volumes
Bound volumes may be subscribers´ collected parts and will contain plates dated from 1829 to 1832 (i.e. date of first issue), or the publisher´s edition of 1832. These may contain plates with amended or deleted dates.
“Quarterly”
Issue
In
1834 a further Parts issue was published. The date is tentatively suggested as
covers are clearly dated at the foot of the back cover advertisement for Westmoreland
etc. Illustrated. Only two examples of this series are extant and their
contents are listed here (author´s collection). The issue is not quite
Quarterly, as Issues 1 and 9 actually contained the contents of four monthly
Parts. Except for views 5/6, all plates are dated 1832.
