KB: one copy 1829 TP; one 1832
TP; one disbound copy of Devonshire only with 1840 TP (but two views dated
1845).
A number of institutions hold Cornwall
Illustrated; e.g. Bangor Uni., CUL., Edinburgh Uni., Nottingham Uni. and
the Bodleian.
Two post-1840 copies are known.
The author´s copy, although
now disbound, was purchased bound and the description below is as it was found.
Many plates had been removed (11 in total, 22 views) and the last leaf was
missing. It did not seem to have included Cornwall.
Main letterpress bound, two different covers that might / might not have been original. Page size 270 mm x 215 mm. Gilt edged leaves[3]. One yellow endpaper with m/s name and date: Cha. E H Elliots, A R Kilby, 26 Jany 1865.
New frontispiece comprises:
Vignette of Lydford Cascade (as Devonshire Illustrated) with FISHER´S
ILLUSTRATIONS / DEVONSHIRE / AND / CORNWALL above (in various script /
sizes) and FISHER, SON & Co. LONDON & PARIS, 1840 (below). This
compares with an example at Bristol University.
Title page to combined work reprinted
with identical text but different font/size, but imprint now reads: Fisher,
Son, & Co., / The Caxton Press Angel Street, St. Martin´s-Le-Grand, London
(all capitals).
An Index to Cornwall follows
(although Cornwall was clearly not included) with Index to Devon on reverse
(this is the same double leaf as the combined title page). Pages 5 to 104
followed (pp.105-106 missing).
Although trimmed through its imprint,
the date to Plate 1/2 seems to read 1840. Plate 3/4 is trimmed very close to
title.
Two plate imprints (i.e.
bottom central) are now dated 1845: 5/6 and 7/8.
Several plate imprints (i.e.
bottom central) are now dated 1837: 11/12, 15/16, 23/24, 25/26, 37/38, 39/40,
43/44, 47/48, 49/50, 59/60, 67/68, 69/70 and 87/88.
A few plates have dates
deleted: 31/32, 57/58, 65/66, 75/76 and 81/82.
On page 25 (pagination G) the
word ENGLAND under the page of text omitted.[4]
Pages 57 to 61 are incorrectly
printed. Page 57 has 60 on reverse (follows page 56) and page 59 is followed by
page 58 (precedes page 61).
Bristol University has a copy dated 1840 in their catalogue, but it has plates dated later.
Devonshire and Cornwall in one
volume. No date on title page but frontispiece is dated 1840 (with Lydford
Cascade vignette). Plates 5/6 and 7/8 are dated 1840. 9/10 is still dated 1832
and 15/16 dated 1837. Plate 23/24 is still dated 1830. Other plates have later
dates: 81/82 is dated 1843 and 51/52 is possibly dated 1846. Cornish views are
dated variously from 1830 to 1843.[5]
