Appendix VIII.
Illustrations included in Cornwall section of Devon & Cornwall Illustrated. Listed according to Somers Cocks S.107 and with individual plate catalogue number added.
A
total of 44 views of Cornwall appeared in the section for that county. A title page for just Cornwall was issued (in
Part 28) and together with the Appendix with Index (Part 36) meant that owners
could well have the two counties bound separately.
Occasionally
names of views show alteration: The print of Treffry-House in Fowey becomes Place-House,
Fowey, Cornwall in most bound volumes (and in Index). Previously Treffryn
House (the family name), renovation work had recently started under its new
owner Joseph T Austen. Polwan Castle seems to be an error on two fronts.
The town is Polruan (Porthruwan in Cornish), so the revision to Polruan
in later printings is understandable. However, there was never really a castle
here, only a small blockhouse fortification with a chain to close the river
when needed. Changing Carclase to Carclaze seems to be simply a
correction.
